December 2020

The latest bunch of hits entering my ears and bringing joy to the world, you’d be forgiven for thinking that with it being December and Christmas trees being up everywhere (for weeks already) that there might be an Xmas hit or two knocking about – you’d be wrong. They’ll get their own section soon.

I always like December in a musical sense, all the websites post their best of the year lists and if you can find the right one it’s an easy source for new music. Spotify do their “wrapped” thing too, well done Dude York.

Anyone, on with the music

Beach Bunny – Prom Queen

💩💩💩💩💩

“Teach me how to be okay. I don’t want to down -play. my emotions. They say beauty is pain. You’ll only be happy. If you look a certain way”

Beach Bunnys album Honeymoon is the first new album I’ve truly loved for a couple of years (blog post here). I guess this was a single from an EP prior to its release.

Day Wave – Drag

💩💩💩💩💩

“I know it’s hard
I know it’s hard being around me
Hold me back
I don’t wanna be a drag”

This found its way on to a playlist maybe a year or so ago, then I spotted a new album of theirs that is getting the once, twice, three times a listen recently. It’s good.

The Divine Comedy – Songs Of Love

💩💩💩💩💩

“Pale, pubescent beasts roam through the streets
And coffee-shops
Their prey gather in herds in stiff knee-length skirts and white ankle-socks
But while they search for a mate my type hibernate
In bedrooms above
Composing their songs of love
Young, uniform minds in uniform lines
And uniform ties
Run round with trousers on fire and signs of desire they cannot disguise
While I try to find words as light as the birds
That circle above
To put in my songs of love
Fate doesn’t hang on a wrong or right choice
Fortune depends on the tone of your voice
So sing while you have time
Let the song shine down from above
And fill you with songs of love
Fate doesn’t hang on a wrong or right choice
Fortune depends on the tone of your voice
So let’s sing while we still can
While the song hangs high up above
Wonderful songs of love
Beautiful songs of love”

It’s the theme music from Father Ted, that’s where you’ve heard it before. It’s just ever so lovely, like a lovely horse.

Fanclub – Leaves

💩💩💩💩💩

“I thought I wanted to be up high
Until I found that there was far
Too much air from my feet to the ground”

From the same folk, more or less, that brought you Letting Up Despite Great Faults (one of my favourite albums, here). These guys have yet to release an album yet, I think. But all the singles/EPs have been gold, so hopefully 2021 sees a release of hits.

Fenne Lily – Elliott

💩💩💩💩💩

“Elliott, remember to forget
Everyone you ever wanted to be is dying the same death”

Another find during the new musical hunt of 2020. Obviously drawn to the song initially by the title, but it’s “beautiful” – even if it is about death and leaving and probably not the most suitable song to play to a 4 year old.

Roxy Music – Virginia Plain (Headman Re-work)

💩💩💩💩💩🌟

“Throw me a line, I’m sinking fast
Clutching at straws, can’t make it”

I love a remix.

Soccer Mommy – Circle The Drain

💩💩💩💩💩

“I’m trying to seem strong for my love
For my family and friends
But I’m so tired of faking
‘Cause I’m chained to my bed when they’re gone
Watching TV alone
‘Til my body starts aching”

You know how every advert these days is getting some lady folk to softly sing a cover of a song? Soccer Mommy, the album I’ve listened to anyway, is basically a collection of modern day adverts set to early Feeder songs, this one being “High”. Some people probably wouldn’t like that.

Summer Camp – Fresh

💩💩💩💩💩

“I swear when I was young, the summers
Were full of fresh and long.”

While revisiting Summer Camp and Welcome to Condale I naturally happened across this song, from their second album.

Trace Mountains – Lost In The Country

💩💩💩💩💩

“Been thinking about the old days more & more
The pettiness of my life & the way it was”

Another album that got added in my “to listen to” playlist while on the hunt (I also seemed to recognise the name as if they’d been recommended by someone in the past at some point?) . A brief listen through at work was favourable, this song standing out. Second listening to the album I’m not entirely sure… Yet.

UB40 – Kingston Town

💩💩💩💩💩

“When I am king
Surely I would need a queen
And a palace and everything, yeah”

Have UB40 ever had a song that wasn’t a cover? Does anyone care? Also this has been stuck in the back of my head on occasions for a couple of years since that Sky1 thriller/drama/mystery thing with the bloke in the yellow coat… Save Me. That’s it! Could delete all the waffle, could delete thayt. I won’t.
