“it’s late September and I really should be back at school”, “wake me up when September ends”, “do you remember, the [23rd] night of September?”… So of course this is the perfect time to end the traditional summer break (yeah, that’s a thing) from #leeshitsinyourears – ask yourself, would anyone want to be beavering away through the hot sticky days of summer listening to music?
Anyway, the last few months have been a blast, probably. A few of the good things in no particular order; playing cricket again after 6 years, watching endless amounts of cricket – the hundred was great!, listening to cricket podcasts #tailendersoftheworlduniteandtakeover, and a summer romance without some Australian chick at the beach.
Anyway, on with the hits and I truly think we have 10 stonkers to kick off the new season and with a whole batch in the pool pile there should be some good ones in future months too, so enjoy the listen and Go Well! (Cheers)
Arms – Shitty Little Disco
💩💩💩💩💩
“Oh sister
Say a prayer for me
Right now I could believe in anything”
Back in my Pirate days when I’d get through more mega bites than [insert fat lad here] the Arms album was one I’d downloaded and never really listened to, I still haven’t. But from a quick flick through this ‘anthem’ stood out. There’s a lot going on and a lot I like about it.
Bad Mustache – Tryhard
💩💩💩💩💩
“neither of us trust our government”
I just love the guitars in this.
Brimful Of Asha – Cornershop (Norman Cook Remix)
💩💩💩💩💩
“there’s dancing…”
I don’t think there’s another song that during the intro makes you want to turn the stereo up as loud as possible just for when it kicks in properly. I think this might also be right up there for my favourite songs of all time ever… And now you’ve just got fiiiiiiiiiive!
Girlhouse – Pretty Girl In LA
💩💩💩💩💩
“New East Side queen
Got filler clung to gritted teeth
I hate to say it glitters, but it does
Too many neon lights, it was nice to know ya
23 was a bust
So we hold our breath goin’ through every tunnel”
Love this song, it’s absolutely something that would play in the background in a scene from Made In Chelsea and I’ll be honest, that’s how I decide if I like music or not most of the time.
GRAZER – Nostalgia Seed
💩💩💩💩💩
“I’ve been let down
Vision starts to fade
Time out of mind
I wanna be your kind
Nostalgia Seed
The way we used to be.”
This is new and if it isn’t its new to me, but if there was one song that could absolutely sum up the music I listened to/remind me of the glory days in the flat at The Wharf this would be it, all sorts of upbeat shoegazey goodness.
Hussy – I Tried
💩💩💩💩💩
“break my heart!”
Think La Sera, Best Coast kind of vibes. Its golden.
Jackson Browne – Somebody’s Baby
💩💩💩💩💩
“She’s got to be somebody’s baby
She must be somebody’s baby
She’s got to be somebody’s baby ’cause she’s so fine”
This is some underrated Totally Acceptable Cheese.
Rex Orange County – Loving Is Easy
💩💩💩💩💩
“Loving is easy, You have me fucked up”
I think I heard this from Ted Lasso (I love Ted Lasso) and even though its sounds like some kind of Bruno Mars pop ditty I still really like it.
Sir Simon – A Little Less Bored
💩💩💩💩💩⭐
“we could drive up to a place near the ocean, we might end up a little less bored”
Like peak Death Cab. Need say no more.
VICTORIA – Growing Up Is Getting Old
💩💩💩💩💩
“Playing Tetris with my feelings
Tryna keep them all inside
Hollow shadows and my soul is spilling over
I’m out of time, mmm-mmh
Closing every door, wanna be alone
Lonely is a way that I survive
Sick of wanting more, sitting on the floor
Wondering where all my feelings go
Nervous system’s aching
Growing up is getting old
Anxiety is draining
Getting up is growing old
Don’t get it
There’s an ocean of emotion that I’m carrying inside
I am cautious
‘Cause I’ve never understood how so much can fit in little me
Star-crossed soul (hmm-hmm)
And I’m used to letting go (used to letting go)
Sink deeper in the flow of it
My demons know (mmm-mmh) exactly where my fears
Are hiding all my tears
I’m torn by nervous system’s aching
Growing up is getting old
Anxiety is draining
Getting up is growing old
And if I ever take that second to leave my worries behind
Maybe I could tread the waters of time
Get out of my mind
Growing up is getting old
(Getting up is growing old)
Getting up is growing old
If your world is breaking
And growing up is getting old
Know that you’re worth saving
And getting up is all you’ve got “
This was the Bulgarian entry in the Eurovision Song Contest. I called it at the time to be one of the best things I’d heard (ever)… It came like 12th.
