Think the last of these was June 2023, 14 months – what happened in that time? I truly couldn’t tell you, just a whole lot of life blurring into one and other. One thing that’s for certain at the minute though is “Work sucks (I know)” so decided to get the old band back together and throw a playlist together. Something to hyperfocus on as the kids would say these days.
You know, the usual format 10 songs that I’ve been digging recently and because I’m a nice guy I’m sharing them with you – so that you can have what I consider to be hits in your ears.
So sit back, plug in the earbuds, grab a sudoku and a cup of mellow birds and enjoy #leeshitsinyourears – August 2024
The Beat – Save It for Later
💩💩💩💩💩
If you can believe it I hadn’t heard this song until like 3 months ago! I truly love it. I don’t really know why, it’s just got lots of bits that I like in music.
I also recently saw a cover by Eddie Vedder, so if you’re one of those none hip kids who try to be hip then go give that a listen and pretend it’s great 👍
Billy Ocean – Red Light Spells Danger
💩💩💩💩💩
I’ll tell you what has happened in the last 14 months … I now love darts! Got totally caught up in the Littler movement last Christmas, went and got a dart board up in the conservatory, started hitting 180s, watched every night of the Premier League – it’s probably my favourite thing. Ever.
I think it’s Ross Smith, he’s a bit mental, but this is his walk on song.
Other walk on songs that I now surprisingly like include Shut Up and Dance and Mr Brightside (I had started to hate it)
The Clash – Police On My Back
💩💩💩💩💩⭐
I love The Clash. We all love The Clash. But they were one of those bands that I never delved into the back catalogue, just played the hits.
Much like Save It for Later this entered the ears a couple of months back and I’m now convinced it’s their second best song after Train in Vain.
Electric Light Orchestra – Sweet Talkin’ Woman
💩💩💩💩💩
“Come back on ELO and carry on playing!”
Fazerdaze – Come Apart
💩💩💩💩💩
You may recognise Fazerdaze from #leeshits such as Misread and Lucky Girl. She’s from New Zealand, and it’s just classic right up my street kind of music.
Flowerboy – Left Me Out To Die
💩💩💩💩💩
What kind of edition of #leeshitsinyourears would it be if it didn’t include some of Spotify’s finest algorithm fodder.
Krooked Kings – Wish We Could Be Friends
💩💩💩💩💩
See above. But with a bit of a summery vibe, like I could imagine this playing on a drive through the countryside, windows down, to a beer garden. xDreamy
The Long Blondes – You Could Have Both
💩💩💩💩💩
“you know that I, I don’t kid myself about happy endings. I’m too old for all that now”
Once every three or four years I tend to revisit some of the music of my younger days. I really really fucking loved the Long Blondes, they’re one of those bands like Bloc Party that I brag about seeing downstairs at the Zodiac (when downstairs was the tiny venue).
Now I always believe Appropriation (By Any Other Name) was their best song – but now, I really don’t know? This has hit me in a spot in never did before … I think it’s the build to the big finale. I love a good climax.
The Mighty Might Bosstones – The Impression That I Get
💩💩💩💩💩
This is actually another darts walk on song, some random Australian, but I put it on a drive home from a particularly shitty day at work (very loud) and it did the job. I think it’s the scream at the start of “I’ve never had to knock on wood” it’s got that sort of passion that touches me somewhere.
Peach Pit – You and Your Friends
💩💩💩💩💩
“Everyone’s a villain, baby. Save for you and your friends”
After the super mega successful launch of #leeahitsinyourears all them years ago Peach Pit – You and Your Friends was one of the first albums I ‘discovered’. I contest to this day that it is a complete 10 on 10 offering.
This, the title track, is also the grand finale. It works well by itself, but if you like it at all I highly recommend giving the album a listen in full.
