#bullyshits

One Christmas while doing the nights at work I spent one of my days off downloading a few albums. I was using a hire van to deliver a few parcels at the end of the shift that had this state of the art tech that you could hook your 7th Gen Nano to by Bluetooth. The year was 2015.

Along with Metric (Pagans in Vegas) and Waxahatchee (Ivy Tripp) I’d also downloaded the debut album, Feeling This, by a band called Bully. And set about an hour’s worth of driving around Banbury, waking people up or disturbing their breakfast – simple joys.

I think at the time Bully were a three piece grunge/pop/rock out of Nashville, US of A but it has possibly turned out that it’s mostly the work of Alicia Bognanno who fronts the band with a revolving ensemble to accompany.

Either way, about 3 songs in I was hooked. By Brainfreeze, the 4th, I was in love and when the next hit, Trying, entered the ears I was convinced this was the greatest music of all time ever. It really was/is a solid debut album.

There’s been a few albums since, new one just around the corner – and while there are a banger or two on each – I’ve not yet felt the same buzz as that initial hit. But what follows are my 10 favourite hits for your ears to enjoy, and trust me, they are all mega hits!

I’m not gonna lie and pretend I’m the biggest Oasis fan in the world. I grew up through the 90s they were around and better than a lot of what I was exposed to, but I can’t say I ever fell deeply in love. There were no posters on the wall.

I’ve seen them live, they headlined an all dayer at The Millennium Stadium in Wales – Foo Fighters were the band on before them. We didn’t last the whole set as after the pints of piss started to fly the ‘lad’ culture that goes with Oasis fans sort of put a dampener on things and I never really listened to them in the same way since.

But there’s no denying there’s ‘talent’ and some hits in their back catalogue. But for me they’ll always be a band that I wouldn’t go out of my way to listen to, but if they were on…

Anyway, my favourite 10 Oasis songs. Sit back and let these hits ooze in to your ears.

Martha are an indie/punkish type band from up t’north, possibly Durham. Even though it’s very much of the standard guitar-bass-drums-harmonies formula there’s a variety of influences you can hear come out in a number of songs. And I like a band that embraces that there was music before them.

I first came across them thanks to the Spotify algorithms  that put them on a mix playlist for me but very quickly started to delve into their back catalogue and it’s just full of hits.

One of my absolute favourite things when a new (to me) band appears is having my favourite song of theirs constantly changing. And that is something Martha definitely delivers.

The Maccabees – Wall Of Arms (2009)

Wall Of Arms

The Maccabees, English indie band. This their second album hits all of my spots. Sure they used to get played back in the day but loosely related to my return to cricket this summer has seen me revisit and rethink just how much of a great album, from head to toe, this is.
